Understanding ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) – Curis Life, Andheri West
At Curis Life Diagnostics, Andheri West, the ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) test is a simple blood test used to detect inflammation in the body. Inflammation is a natural immune response triggered by infection, injury, or disease. Normally, once the underlying condition resolves, the inflammation subsides. However, when inflammation persists or recurs, it can indicate a chronic condition or active disease.
The ESR test helps assess the presence and severity of inflammation. It is commonly used to monitor the progression or treatment response of conditions such as:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
- Vasculitis
- Chronic infections or inflammatory conditions
This is a non-specific test, meaning it cannot pinpoint the exact cause or location of inflammation. Therefore, ESR is often ordered alongside other diagnostic tests to identify or monitor an underlying medical condition.
When is an ESR Test Recommended?
At Curis Life, doctors may recommend an ESR test if you experience symptoms such as:
- Unexplained fever
- Joint pain or stiffness
- Generalized body aches
- Abdominal discomfort
- Blood in stool or unexplained fatigue
The ESR test helps guide further investigation and supports diagnosis, especially in cases of chronic illness or autoimmune disease.
What Can Affect ESR Levels?
Elevated ESR values may be observed in:
- Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections
- Autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus
- Post-surgical inflammation or trauma
- Certain cancers like lymphoma and multiple myeloma
- Conditions like anemia or pregnancy
- Older age or use of certain medications
A decrease in ESR over time may indicate a positive response to treatment or a reduction in disease activity.
Test Preparation
Fasting is not mandatory for this test, but overnight fasting (8–12 hours) may be preferred if additional blood tests are being performed. Please inform your doctor at Curis Life about any medications you are taking, as these can influence test results.
Understanding Your Test Results
Test result ranges may vary slightly depending on laboratory methodology. At Curis Life, your results will be interpreted in context with:
- Your symptoms
- Medical history
- Other diagnostic tests
This integrated approach ensures accurate assessment and appropriate follow-up.
What Does the ESR Test Measure?
The ESR test measures how quickly red blood cells (erythrocytes) settle at the bottom of a test tube over the course of one hour. Normally, these cells settle slowly. In the presence of inflammation, blood proteins such as fibrinogen increase, causing red blood cells to stick together and form stacks, which settle more rapidly. This leads to an elevated ESR reading.
Although ESR is useful in detecting inflammation, it is not a disease-specific test. It is best used in combination with clinical evaluation and other laboratory investigations.
