A CT Abdomen scan is a quick, painless imaging test that uses X-rays and computer technology to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the abdominal organs.
It helps evaluate the liver, pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, spleen, intestines, and surrounding blood vessels for any abnormalities.

Why is a CT Abdomen Scan Done?
Doctors may recommend this scan to:
- Detect tumors, cysts, or masses in abdominal organs
- Evaluate unexplained abdominal pain or swelling
- Identify kidney stones, gallstones, or blockages
- Assess infections, abscesses, or inflammatory bowel disease
- Detect internal bleeding or trauma
- Monitor known liver, kidney, or pancreatic conditions
Symptoms That May Need a CT Abdomen Scan
- Persistent or severe abdominal pain
- Unexplained weight loss or fever
- Blood in stool or urine
- Jaundice (yellowing of eyes/skin)
- Abdominal swelling or tenderness
- Suspected internal injury after trauma
Instructions to Follow Before a CT Abdomen Scan
- Fasting: Do not eat or drink anything (except water) for 4–6 hours before the scan
- Oral contrast: You may be asked to drink an oral contrast solution before the scan
- Hydration: Drink water after the scan to help flush out the contrast
- Clothing: Wear loose, metal-free clothes (avoid belts, jewellery, or watches)
- Medication: Continue your regular medicines unless advised otherwise
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, allergic to contrast dye, or have kidney issues
- Bring previous CT or ultrasound reports for comparison
These instructions will also be provided at the time of booking your appointment.
How the Test is Done
- You will lie on a motorized table that slides through the CT scanner
- A contrast dye may be given orally and/or injected into a vein if needed
- The scanner captures detailed cross-sectional images of your abdominal organs
- The scan is painless and usually takes 10–15 minutes
After the scan, you can resume your normal activities immediately
